Processes and Requirements for Airman Medical Exam:

Definition of Airman Exam Classes:

FIRST CLASS MEDICAL:

    • For Air Transport Pilots (ATP) which are typically commercial pilots who fly passengers.

    • Valid for 12 months under age 40 and for six months for airman aged 40 and over.

    • Lapses automatically to SECOND CLASS after 6 months if over 40 and THIRD CLASS after one year.

    • May require an ECG based on age and/or physical findings (performed in my office and included in the exam).

    • Requires 20/20 vision with or without glasses or contacts.

    • Any new student interested in an aviation career should obtain a First Class Exam to verify qualifications.

  1. SECOND CLASS MEDICAL:

    • For commercial pilots flying for hire.

    • Valid for 12 months at any age. Lapses automatically to THIRD CLASS after 12 months.

    • Requires 20/20 vision with or without glasses or contacts.

  2. THIRD CLASS MEDICAL:
    • ​For general aviation pilots flying personal/family and recreation.
    • Valid for 5 years if under 40 years old, and 2 years if 40 or older.​

Prior to your appointment:

​PERSONAL:

  • Be sure and bring a valid picture ID, preferably a drivers license or passport.

  • Bring any FAA requested information if you have ongoing medical conditions.

  • If you wear/need corrective lenses of vision, bring your glasses.

  • If you wear contacts, bring your contact lens case. If you have backup glasses, bring them as well.

FOR FAA:

  • You should complete a medxpress application on faa.gov prior to your appointment.

    • I cannot issue your medical until that online application is complete.

    • If unable to do this, we can still do your exam, but I am unable to issue your medical until that is done.

    • You can access this and set up a user name/password at faa.gov/medxpress.
